Reading Tips

Allow your child to read to you and then ask as many questions as you can. It's good to ask before, during, and after reading. You should also ask questions that allows the child to make inferences based on what is read. This is called linking details and it builds the child's reading comprehension.

1. What do you think the book is about?
2. What do you think will happen next? Can you PREDICT what will happen next?
3. How does (name of character) feel?
4. Why is s/he happy, sad, excited, nervous, or worried?
5. If someone in the story made a decision, ask your child was that a good choice?

Parent/Child Communication Tips

I have two children and parenting is not easy! My daughter, Mahek, is in Kindergarten and I have a one year old boy, Maaz. I feel that communication between parents and children is very important. My students are encouraged daily to share with parents how their day went. I also highlight some of the activities that they can come home and share with you.

I understand some children do not share how their day went, that is my daughter! So, I can relate and understand how you feel. However, please do NOT give-up, just keep asking your child everyday and little by little, he/she will open up. In our class we have stations, play games, do journal writing, story problems, leader of the day (does the calendar and reading sight words), and much more.

So if you're child is not good at sharing their day, ask them specific questions like:

1. Did you have stations today?
2. What station did you go to? What did you do there?
3. Did you play any games? (Our class favorite is "Around the World." Ask your child about that game).
4. Did you read/hear a story today?
5. What was the story about?
6. Who was the leader today?

I hope that you will find these tips useful! If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email it to me tulhaque@yahoo.com. I would love to add to our list.

Happy Reading.
